Manos Meanderings on a Monday Morning

Manos Meanderings on a Monday Morning

Good Monday morning, all you early bird coffee and tea drinkers. Did you read a cozy mystery over the weekend? Want to hear a confession? I’ve discovered a young adult writer and am devouring her books, one after the other. It was a long, long time ago that I was a young adult, so maybe I’m into my second childhood. The writer’s name is Mary Hahn. You’ll find her books on Amazon.com. My favorite so far is Tallahassee Higgins. Has anybody else read any of Mary Hahn’s books?

Our Sunday School lesson yesterday was from the Book of Judges. This is not my favorite Book to read. It relates a lot of lawlessness and violence, but yesterday we zeroed in on Deborah. She was evidently a brave and a wise woman and led Israel through some turbulent times.

Do any of you remember someone who used to drink coffee from a saucer? My dad did. I didn’t think much about it. It was just something I took for granted. He poured his coffee from his cup into his saucer to let it cool before sipping it. This morning, I found that this habit has an interesting story behind it. The Father of our Country, George Washington, even used it as an illustration when he was talking to Thomas Jefferson! You’ll find that fascinating bit of history in Appalachian Magazine. I’ve also put it on my Facebook page.

Yesterday, someone introduced himself to me at church, a retired preacher. I do believe in nice, firm handshakes, but this one was memorable. My hand was nearly crushed to death! I guess that’s enthusiasm.

My brothers and I have interesting conversations. Last night, my Minnesota brother and I somehow got on the subject of Edgar Allan Poe. We both were required to memorize some of his poetry when we were in high school. One of Tracy’s favorites, and mine too, was The Raven. “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary…” My husband and I used to recount this poem to each other too, taking turns on the stanzas. He had the same junior English teacher as I, a dear, devoted lady who loved Mr. Poe. I suspect she married her husband because he resembled Edgar Allan.

I’ve rambled this morning, over several topics, but, hey! This is Monday. I’m trying to collect my scattered thoughts and zero in on another week. Whatever your week holds, I hope there are lots of happy moments, many favorite people, and at least two or three of your favorite cozy mysteries!
