An Iffy Kind of Day

An Iffy Kind of Day

Sitting here with my hot cup of Folgers, looking out at a, to be honest, rather drab world, I see Annie and Midge walking up the hill. Annie takes long strides, going at a good clip, and Midge’s little legs work double time to keep up.

I really have no idea whether the woman’s name is Annie and I’m pretty sure the dog is not named Midge, but I’ve named them anyway. Nobody but you and I will know. The point is, the day is dingy but Annie walks, rain or shine, hot or cold, and, of course, Midge walks too.

On days like this, which are neither hot nor cold, snowy nor sunny, rainy or dry (it’s just sort of dampish) I tend to draw the curtains, turn on every light in the house, light the fireplace, and retreat. I lose myself in the world of books, either of my own making or somebody else’s, and I enjoy a more decisive day.

However, I admire people like Annie who meet each day head on, no matter what sort it is. And, I feel better knowing that she is undaunted by the weather or perhaps whether or not she feels like walking; she just walks. I’ll bet after the walk, she is invigorated and dives into an active day, making it brighter in her imagination, if not in reality.

Some of the surrounding states have a definite sort of day…an icy sort. Not good. Of all winter’s many faces, ice is the least attractive. So, I hope everyone passes through the day safely. Some of my friends farther north are inundated with snow. You either love snow or you hate it, no ambivalence about snow.

I can control some things; some things I can’t; but, I can control my reactions to them. If I don’t let the dingy day get inside of me, I’ll do well. Each of us has the capacity to turn on internal lights, to make a happy day out of a drab one, to make the sun shine for someone else and in doing so, brighten the day for ourselves.
