Heat Wave!

Heat Wave!

Oh, my goodness! The temperature may actually reach 25 today. Can you believe it? It has quite a way to go because now it’s not quite ten degrees and, true to form, it’ll get colder just before sunrise. (As you can see, I’m up pretty early.)

Believe it or not, I’m not the only one stirring. I see lights on in the windows of a few neighbors. It’s a nice feeling, to know others are early risers too. On this cold morning, those lights remind me of Christmas card scenes–candles at the window. Even though the world seems to be dark, those lights, like hope, make a difference.

I’ve forgotten to update you on my latest adventure into the world of computers which are beyond belief to this twentieth century woman. At the last meeting, the instructor took us by the virtual hand and introduced us to the virtual world of Excel. You know what? It wasn’t scary at all. It was virtually fascinating and fun. She also taught us to create a desktop folder. Neat stuff! But wait! This is not the manila folder of my childhood. This exists only in my computer. I can even put things in it (not really, though, just virtually.)

Because I’m curious about words and their origins, I’ve thought about the word “virtual”. I thought it lent emphasis, as in, “She ate virtually all the chocolate pie.” It seems that I’ve been wrong. I looked it up on an online dictionary and I’m more confused than ever. The word has been around for a long time, sort of out there waiting in the wings but now with the internet, “Virtual” has come onstage and is used to describe magical stuff I can do with my computer. Who knew?

The morning grows lighter. Trees and houses take shape. Before, they were only shadows. Virtual trees and houses? Or are they virtual now? Having nothing to do with the internet, I venture to think they are real. The longer I think about it, the more confused I get. May your morning be happy, productive, and hopeful, whether the temperature registers eight or eighty and don’t worry about the meanings of new-fangled words.

  1. And the warmer temperatures, all the way up to 30 means SNOW. It’s snowing and it’s beautiful, but then, I don’t have to drive in it. Got in my water therapy class and went grocery shopping, and I’m good to light the fireplace, snuggle down with a good cozy book and enjoy the week end!
Which reminds me, I didn’t get to read your children’s story Wednesday. Hope I’ll get to enjoy the entire story soon.

    • Is it really up to 30? Last I looked it was 20 but there’s snow for sure. It’ll be interesting to watch people go up the hill and see how the cars do. I hope everyone stays safe. Yes, the children’s story is fun.
