Gone with the North Wind

Gone with the North Wind

The warm weather is gone with the north wind. Sure enough, roof tops and lawns are white with snow. This isn’t the pretty, fluffy stuff of Christmas cards, but is more like sleet–cold and frozen and there’s just a thin covering. But, sure enough, winter is winter, so what can I expect?

Changing the subject abruptly: I become surer as I grow older that a whole vocabulary died with my dad. My brothers and I mention to each other many times that some of Dad’s expression which we always took for granted because we grew up with them, just aren’t heard any more. Never curse words. I never, in all my life, heard Dad say a curse word, but words he had heard from his father and grandfather. This morning, one turned up on The Word of the Dayeuchred (pronounced yoo-kerd.) It means to be all tired out. Many times I’ve heard Dad say that so and so was euchred out. It was like meeting an old friend when I read that this morning and knew how to spell it.

Stew is on the dinner menu for this cold day. Stew with cornbread and butter. Upside down pineapple cake for dessert. The fireplace will be on duty too. It looks like a good day.

I hope all your shivers come from cozy mysteries today and not from that cold north wind.
