Don’t Open the Door

Don’t Open the Door

When the blues come knocking at your door, don’t open it. They come disguised as many things–fear, worry, anxiety, guilt, sadness, if only, despair–whatever their names, don’t invite them in and make them feel comfortable. They might never leave if you do. Goodness knows, there’s more than enough sadness and misery to go around. In fact, it’s hard to escape it. But, you don’t have to purposely entertain the blues and make them a part of your day.

I don’t know a whole lot about math, but I know that negatives like to multiply. Don’t believe me? Just start to dwell on one sad or upsetting thing and see if it is content to be the only negative. My experience has been that once a disturbing thought enters my head, it leads to another one and another and pretty soon, the whole day is colored gray.

It doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t have to let the blues set up their home with you. Take charge. Banish that dreary thought as soon as it comes. Replace it with a positive…a remembered bright spot, a joke that was really funny, a family happening that has stood the test of time. Get out in the sunshine. Give someone a call. Go work in the garden and get dirt on your hands. Read a book!

When the blues come calling, don’t let them in!
