Dogs and Cats

What do dogs and cats know that we don’t? If you have a pet, you’ve probably wondered, just as I have. Sometimes, Nemo’s ears will perk up and he’ll be on alert, looking toward the window or door. His wonderful senses, especially ears and nose clue him in to a lot that’s going on outside the house.

He knows when a friend or family is coming to the door, before I do. He goes wagging and barking his friendly bark. Not so if it’s someone he doesn’t know, or if it’s the UPS truck or FedEx. For some reason, maybe it’s the distinctive sound of the engine, he does not like those delivery trucks.

If he’s in the back yard and a neighbor dog begins to bark, he usually joins in. Is it in sympathy? Are they asking each other questions? Are they commenting on their breakfast or supper? At this point, I bring him inside lest he un-endear himself to neighbors who don’t appreciate a doggie chorus when they are trying to sleep or enjoy a quiet day outside.

Humans often guess at why a dog or cat acts in a certain way. Sometimes, they are pretty obvious. Other times, we can only wonder, What does he see or hear that I don’t? It’s a mystery.
