Coffee and a Cloudy Day

The last day of April is forecast to go out with a fanfare–a roll of thunder and heavenly lighting–lightning, that is. Right now, the sky is simply cloudy. But, the coffee is especially good this morning. Is there something about rain being in the forecast that enhances the taste of coffee?

Robins are busy outside in the grass and a brown thrasher hurried through earlier, no doubt rushing over for a quick breakfast before getting back to her nest and the future babies.

If we do get strong winds, I sure hope those bird babies are safe and the nests are sturdy. It’s pretty sad to see eggs or baby birds on the ground after a storm. Not to be judgmental, but I think the robins are the worst nest builders. Maybe they are in too much of a hurry–flighty. Heh.

As I do each year, tomorrow I’ll re-post the article I wrote for The Daily Press many years ago, about the Peggs tornado. It was May 2, 1920, that a tornado bore down on a small town in northeast Oklahoma and wiped nearly all of it off the map. It’s a part of our history. The lives that were lost and the heroism of the rescuers deserve to be remembered. So, tomorrow and the next day, we’ll take a trip back nearly a hundred years and step into a page of the past.
