Changing Times

Changing Times

Do you ever feel that time is passing in such a whirl that you want to reach out and grab it and tell it to slow down for a bit until you can catch your breath? Change. Change all around us.

In the midst of all the change, some things become more popular.  Antique furniture, classic cars, are reminders of a time past, a time that seems familiar and comfortable. We like to keep reminders of permanence and pleasant happenings.

Love, honesty, respect, truth, hope have always been here and I imagine they’re going to stay. They are like immovable rocks in a swift, changeable river. These are things we can hang onto and not be carried away with impermanence.

I’m glad for the immovable. History has happened and will not ever be any different, no matter who tries to re-write or destroy it. Some books that were written generations or centuries ago are still with us. People  love to read and that’s a wonderful thing.

Maybe that’s our lifeline–books. Firstly, the Bible, which tells what has happened and what will happen. History books, first-hand accounts, diaries, journals, words of witnesses. And, as well as facts, there is fiction. The type of leisure reading people enjoy tells a lot about a society. In the midst of fiction, there are historical facts, quotes, illustrations of day to day living. Fiction can be a mirror reflecting how life, through the centuries, has changed. Change is happening but so is permanence, and that’s a rock we can stand on.
