Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

Today is Ash Wednesday, a commemoration to begin the season of Lent, leading up to Easter. Whether we celebrate this day or not, it’s a good time to take an inward look at the person we really are, then an outward look at where we are going and who we are following.

My books have been accused of being preachy. I find that amusing, since this is the very thing I’ve worked for them not to be. My protagonists are Christians, but their lifestyle and beliefs are a natural part of their lives. In other words, I can’t separate them from their faith. I’ve tried to show that Darcy, Flora, and Ned behave as real people would. I did not create them as a tool for proselytizing. I created them to build interesting, believable, fun mysteries, entertaining for their readers.

One thing these women are not is hypocrites. They are fictional, but, in their fiction, they are real. They simply are what they are and don’t pretend to be anything else. On Ash Wednesday, as on every day, it’s good to take an inward look at ourselves. Are we real in being what we believe? The ashes that some wear on Ash Wednesday should be a reminder of Who we follow, and our hope of eternal life.
