A Small Dusting of Hope

A Small Dusting of Hope

The deck railing looked white under the porch light. What? Snow? Yes, snow. As far as I know, none was in the forecast, but we did get a dusting. Just a small scattering of white as winter flung its careless hand, but it was a nice surprise.

Do you like to start the day with an inspirational reading? I do. Words that uplift and make the world a little brighter are sort of like that small snowfall–a happy surprise. Just a small change can make a world of difference. But, a quote or a thought that is negative in any way–how helpful is that? With so many lovely words from which to choose, why would anyone speak or write anything less that uplifting ones?

Some people are gifted with the ability to speak what is needed. One word of praise or appreciation might warm a heart that is feeling a bit of winter bleakness. We already pretty much know our weaknesses and failures. What we need are words that lift us up out of the sorry state of condemnation and let us know that with a new day, hope and joy and possibilities are all around.

The Bible teaches the importance of words and how we use them. King Solomon said, “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24) and “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life” (Proverbs 15:4). There are many other references in both Old and New Testaments about the power of words. Words, like a gentle snow, can fall on a wounded soul and suddenly, the day is beautiful.
