Who Do You Think You Are?

Who Do You Think You Are?

Have you ever been asked that question, usually in a taunting tone: Who do you think you are, anyway? Next time you are asked, answer: I’m royalty, a child of the King. Who are you?

The Bible also says, “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he” Proverbs 23:7. What you think about yourself has a lot to do with your daily peace, joy, and satisfaction.

If everyone lived up to his or her God-given potential, self-doubt would go into hiding and hopes and dreams would become reality, but for some reason, we sometimes seem to have a little impish voice whispering in our ear, “You can’t do that. Who do you think you are, anyway? Other people can do these things, but you’re not smart enough, rich enough, young enough, talented enough…” the list goes on.

Being talented or rich or having a high IQ certainly doesn’t hurt anything, but the main ingredient to success is within each of us: do we think we can? Are we willing to give it a try? Or, do we give up before we start, thinking, “Other people can, but not me.”

President Franklin Roosevelt once said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” I’ll change that a bit, and say, “The only thing that’s standing in our way is we, ourselves.” It’s strange and almost funny that our worst enemies are ourselves.

Life has a way of beating us up. The road is not always easy. It has bumps, potholes, detours, and a lot of crooks and turns. We take those wrong turns, and then we look back and decide we’ve just made too many mistakes, too many bad choices. We haven’t had the opportunities or advantages that others have had and it’s too late to follow those hopes and dreams. They are out of our reach. Wrong! It’s never too late.

Lamentations 3:22-23: “His compassions never fail; they are new every morning.” Each night, God wipes the slate clean and the next morning, we begin with new hope and renewed confidence; another day has dawned and we have the privilege of being in it and heading in the right direction.

You are special and you are unique. You’re a whole lot more than just the sum of a lot of wonderful parts. Does a dream beckon to you? Reach for it! Dust off those hopes and goals. Get rid of that heavy load of self-doubt; what did it ever do that’s good for you anyway? Stand up and get going. There’s a miracle within you that’s just waiting to happen!
