What Is the Name of the Flame?

What Is the Name of the Flame?

Almost all of us have something inside of us that keeps us going, some flame, some hope or desire or cherished dream. It’s the reason we look forward to another day, we walk with a spring in our step (or a hitch in our hobble) and have a gleam in our eye. I guess it is sort of like being in love. When we are in love, it is that significant other who causes the world to seem brighter, which, when you stop and think about it, is unfair to the other person. Nobody should have such a huge burden to live up to.

For some of us it is painting that lovely picture, writing a special poem, or crocheting something beautiful and useful. For those of us destined to write, it is just that…delving into a fictional world and become a part of it, entirely losing ourselves in our heroine’s life. And, it is at that point that we open ourselves up to the possibility of heartbreak.

What if the picture we’ve painted and taken such pride in, isn’t all that beautiful to anyone else but us? What if the cap or sweater we’ve labored on for hours is casually tossed aside by the recipient? What if the book we’ve worked on and poured ourselves into for months is passed over and ignored? What then?

If we paint, write, crochet, or keep a spotless house for someone else, we may be rewarded with pain and disappointment. If we feel we are led by the Lord to do these things, that’s something else entirely. No possibility of failure there. The important thing is to do what we feel led to do, in the way we feel we should. We are to hone and shape, shine and stitch until our masterpiece is the best we can do. If we’ve done our best, what more is there?

Only the knowledge that we haven’t shirked and that we’ve welcomed the challenge and the blessing of the gift we’ve received. We haven’t hidden it away somewhere; we’ve worked and sweated and laughed and cried and tried, failed, and tried a little harder until we’ve completed the task. Whatever is the name of the flame that warms your heart, don’t disregard it or allow it to go out. Accept it with gratitude and then go for it. It will put a spring in your step and make the whole world a happier, brighter place.
