That Little Brown Church

That Little Brown Church

The Little Brown Church in the Vale was one of my dad’s favorite songs. Each time I hear it, I think of him. If you’d like to hear the Statler Brothers sing it, click on their name. This song always brings memories of a simpler, quieter, more devout time in our nation’s history. I love and respect the impact Christianity has had on our nation and on my family. Maybe that’s why in the Darcy and Flora series and in the Ned series, there are small churches that are important to the characters in the books.

And, that’s why I was shocked when I saw the article on Facebook this morning about an advocacy group in Ada, Oklahoma, insisting that a church remove the cross from its steeple. http://www.theadanews.com/news/ecu-to-remove-crosses-bibles-from-campus-chapel/article_1cd2b69c-5d13-11e7-9715-3ba17866f73e.html.

Why? Has the cross become offensive? I don’t think anyone has complained, but a group in Washington, D. C., miles away from Ada, decided it just might be offensive to somebody and be exclusive, not inclusive. Well, as I remember Scripture, the Lord Jesus invited everyone to come to Him. He didn’t refuse anybody.

One by one, we are being forced to remove symbols of who we are and where we came from. History is history. It happened. We are who we are because of all that has gone before. Will the flag of the United States of America be removed because it might be offensive to some? When will we reach down deep inside us and say enough is enough. We are who we are, not meaning to offend any person or group but not retreating from what we believe and the very foundation of faith.
