That Sound You Hear Is Me Counting Down

What’s that sound you ask? An excited voice counting backward? It’s me! Counting down to the much anticipated release of By the Fright of the Silvery Moon. It will, at last, see sunlight and be ready to go into the hands of cozy mystery readers August 2, according to my publisher.

Yesterday was an excellent time for a critique. We celebrated with four of us around the table. We missed Carolyn, but trust she’ll be back with us in August.

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are? Interesting question, one that Jane read to us as she shared excerpts from a speech her husband Lonnie gave several years ago. Jane, back from recent trips to the Gulf and also to Montana, was brimming with news of the special times she shared with her family. True to form, she penned some poems about those vacations. Secrets of the Ocean was inspired by her visit to the beach. The Earthquakes in Our Life was the result of experienceing a 4.0 earthquake while in Montana.

Nancy, author of The Grace Impact and a delightful, inspirational blog, Grace Notes, has been busy with her family. She posed an interesting question which comes to many writers along their sometimes frustrating journey: Am I stuck or am I waiting on God?  When writers are not writing, they read! In fact, even as they are writing, they read! Nancy has read a most interesting book by Holly Michael, Crooked Lines . I’d like to take a peek at it too. It’s on Amazon.com.

Peg, feeling bright and chipper, has been reading. She shared with us what, in her opinion, makes a book good or not so much. “One of my favorite books I’ve read recently is The Murder of a Sweet Old Lady,” Peg said.

Three sweet old ladies gasped and turned to her with shocked gazes. “What?”

Peg quickly explained she liked it because the author, Denise Swanson, wrote it so cleverly that she couldn’t figure out the culprit until the end of the book.

“But, I read another book that I didn’t care for at all,” Peg said. She went on to explain in this other mystery, which shall remain nameless, the characters were not appealing. She didn’t really care about them. And, the dialogue left much to be desired. The author often didn’t name the speaker and Peg was left to guess who was doing the talking.

I read an email from my publisher announcing the firm publication date for By the Fright of the Silvery Moon–August 2. It was a time for celebration and good cheer, rather like rejoicing in the birth of a baby. So, that’s the answer to today’s mini-mystery. Ned McNeil’s newest adventure is about to hit the market!
