Rains Came Down; Floods Came Up

Rains Came Down; Floods Came Up

Do you remember the song about the man who built his house on a rock? The rains came down and the floods came up, but the house on the rock stood firm. The weather we’ve had for the last few days will test every foundation. Each time I was awake last night, rain was coming down. Not just a sprinkle, but a steady, hard downpour. Right now as of this moment, the rain has stopped but my little weather app says it’s going to come again. Street flooding, river, creek flooding are all over the place. This run-off is rushing downstream via the Illinois River toward Cherokee County. I don’t know what depth the Illinois River will be today, but I’m sure it’ll be monstrous.

Yesterday, I ran between raindrops and snapped a few pictures. The camera doesn’t really show how much water was all around. The children used to race leaf boats down the ditch beside the street when it ran with rain water. It was fuller and swifter yesterday than I’ve ever seen it.

On a dark day, the greens of trees and grass seem to be brighter. That’s the way they are this morning. I’m thankful that my family and I are safe and dry and I hope you and yours are too. Look for the good things to enjoy in this day; they are all around us.

May you have walls to shelter against the winds, a roof to keep out the rain, tea beside a warm fire, and those you love near you to cheer you.
