Race Horses and Writing a Mystery

Race Horses and Writing a Mystery

On this day in 1973 Secretariat won the Triple Crown in racing, the first horse to do so since Citation in 1948. Will Justify join that exclusive rank today at the Belmont Stakes? Will you be glued to your television set to watch that exciting race? It must be my Irish ancestry that causes my blood to stir and my heart beat to quicken as I watch those beautiful horses, hooves pounding, fly around the track; each one is doing the best he can, straining every muscle, every nerve. Only thing is, I’d like for them all to win and it can be only one. However, in doing his best, to my mind, each one is a winner.

Evangeline Carver loved race horses. She entered one each year in the Kentucky Derby. Although she was well into her eighties when Ned met her, she still loved to ride. She rode a little mare named Melanie. She and Melanie had been best friends for over twenty years. But one day, on a short ride into the pasture, something happened. Something drastic which changed things forever at Carver Farms.

Ned had only met Evangeline but the two seemed to really hit it off. Ned liked the feisty old lady and her unorthodox plans for her estate after she died. But, the things she kept learning about Evangeline (in her girlhood, she was known as Eva) didn’t set well with her. Amazing things, rather unpleasant things. However, Ned knew that in her heart, Evangeline had meant well. She had given Ned a charge and, although Ned might not be able to carry it out, she was surely able to see that evildoers had no part in the destiny of Evangeline’s legacy.

The third book in the Ned McNeil moonlight series is well underway. For some reason, Ned seems always to be in the middle of a mystery. Maybe it’s her curiosity; maybe it’s her sense of justice. Whatever, writing Moonstruck and Murderous is a great deal of fun. I can hardly wait for you to read it.
