As you know, I love to write. If papers were dollars, I’d be a wealthy woman because of all the notebooks and other written material in my house. Several years ago, I began keeping a book for Sara and Nathan. It’s sort of like a journal only it’s all about Sara and Nathan, the things they are doing, their interests, an ordinary day with them at my house. I have a few pictures in it and hand drawings to show how they’ve grown from year to year, Thanksgiving hand turkeys each November. I also made an almanac for Sara, as I’ve mentioned before, with a poem and photos for each month, and another book, a “Day in the Life of Sara at Mem’s and Pop’s House.” One day when Nathan was smaller, a little dog came down the hill. We kept him until we could find his owner. Actually, Peg, my neighbor next door, found his owner. But that little dog named Max was the starting off point for a small picture book for Nathan.
Dawn has made two prayer journals for me and, as I look through the current one this morning, I find many verses of Scripture that are meaningful and special to me. “Put off the old man, And be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and…put on the new man” (Ephesians 4:22-24). “And be ye kind one to another” (Ephesians 4:32). And the thought comes, that how much better the world would be if we followed these admonitions. We read them, but do we do them?
Anyway, back to books: I’ve started some hand-written fictional tales for my grandchildren but, alas, I have yet to finish them. Before Matt and Dawn were married, I started a small book that is probably 4 x 6 inches. In it, I’ve put favorite Bible verses, random sayings, poetry, both mine and other people’s, and several colored pencil drawings. From time to time, I add to that book. I even have a very small book in which I’ve jotted down a few really unusual dreams I’ve had through the years. I’ll bet the Cozy Critiquers would get a bang of them! I really like making books! And I encourage you to do the same. Each of us has a story or many stories. You have your own, an autobiography, and maybe some ideas for a fictional tale ready to be spun into the fabric of a story. If you’re not into writing by hand, the computer makes it easy. However, in years to come, your grandchildren or great-grandchildren might really treasure something in your own handwriting.
