Guesting at Southern Writers Magazine

Guesting at Southern Writers Magazine

If there’s an extra lilt to my writing this morning, it’s because my guest blog at Southern Writers Magazine is on this prestigious magazine’s blog page.  What did I write about? Snagging the reader’s attention.

As a reader, you have a vast sea of books from which to choose. When you pick up a book and glance through it, what keeps you reading? Is it the opening sentence?

As a writer, what do you do to make sure that the reader chooses to read your book, from all the many begging for her attention? What hooks do you employ to keep her turning pages?

Writing cozy mysteries is, first of all, fun! If the author is enthusiastic about her book, makes the characters come alive, and uses rich words to paint a vivid picture of the action, then her readers will be enthusiastic too. Writing is like painting an eye-catching picture. Only, the writer’s tools are words instead of paint and colors.
