The Coffee Pot is On; The Welcome is Warm

The Coffee Pot is On; The Welcome is Warm

Come on inside this morning, out of the cold. The coffee pot is on; the welcome is warm. Let’s travel back in time to last year, December, in fact. Christmas is coming and I’ve written a Christmas cozy mystery. And, I was thinking, and thinking, and…

I woke up this morning thinking, Lord, in something as important as Life with its potential for making lots of mistakes, I need a do-over.

Does anybody else ever feel that way?

It is dark this morning. My quiet neighbor goes to his car, lunch box in hand, ready to head off into the day. As he backs his car out of the driveway, the car’s lights make a welcome break in the darkness. It is dark here in my living room too, except for the computer and my Christmas tree. Lights show up so much better in the darkness, sort of like good showing up in evil; we notice it and are glad for it.

I’ve read that some people purposely travel to countries which have short days and long nights so that they can enjoy the coziness of indoor lights, Christmas trees, and fireplaces, during the Christmas season.

dark Edinburgh, Scotland

I love a lighted fireplace, the glow of a candle, Christmas lights inside people’s homes.

The only Christmas mystery I’ve written so far is Moonlight Can Be Murder. It is a book of contrasts: friendship and distrust, love and hate, danger and safety, light and darkness. Ned and her friends Pat and Jackie decorate Granger’s Mansion for Christmas with red ribbons and candles, Flames leap up Ned’s fireplace casting flickering shadows on the wall, Jackie plans a Christmas party and Pat gets the church all decked out for a special night. But, just outside all the light, danger lurks and mystery awaits in the darkness.

Even the cover picture of Moonlight Can Be Murder is a contrast in light and darkness. The old house is shadowy in the December night but high above it shines a full, silvery moon, a moon that has witnessed some nefarious doings at the mansion and just may witness more; and, in the window, a candle glows.

Will this dark morning become brighter or will the clouds bring rain and possibly wintry weather? Any sort of weather is good for reading a cozy mystery or, in my case, for writing the next few chapters in the Moonlight series. Believe me, it is full of darkness and light too. I can hardly wait for you to read it.

Part of a 5-star review. My thanks to the reader: I loved this book from start to finish!! I love to pick up a book and immediately realize I have a winner. A wonderful mystery surrounded by a family history that needs to be corrected.
