A Little Light Romance

A Little Light Romance

Let me tell you, I’m a dreamer–always have been, probably always will be. “Moonlight and Roses” is one of my favorite songs and I’ll bet not many of you have ever heard it. It’s an old, gentle, romantic song.

Like a lot of things, I’m afraid the word romance has taken on a new meaning in recent years. I don’t even particularly agree with the dictionary definition. To me romance means candlelight, soft music, holding hands, chats in front of the fireplace, walks through autumn leaves. Romance is as hard to define as a lovely rainbow, yet it is real and what would life be without it?

Even though the Darcy and Flora series are cozy mysteries, romance is woven into the plot. Just a hint, a suggestion, a look or a touch. These are all that are needed for the imagination to take flight.

In some of the world’s great paintings, the artist instilled a bit of mystery with each brush stroke. In The Mona Lisa, what is she thinking?  In The Song of the Lark, what hopes does that lovely bird song inspire in the peasant girl? These are mysteries leaving room for the imagination to soar and for that fragile, shimmering daydream called romance.
