A Light in the Wastebasket

A Light in the Wastebasket

Yesterday, we discussed real life mysteries. This morning, I’m reprinting the short-lived mystery from last February 4. A funny outcome.

Yesterday, something happened that has never happened before, in all my twenty-one years– a real-life, short-lived mystery. It was still dark when I got up. The first order of business is to start the coffee pot. I went to the trash can to empty some coffee grounds. My waste basket is tall, white plastic. I emptied the grounds and my heart did a flip.At the bottom of the waste basket, a light shone–not from the outside in, but from the inside out.

What?? A tiny being who had gotten trapped inside? Tinker Bell? My elusive inspiration, stuck in a dark place? Then, I remembered. A couple of days before, I had thrown away a flashlight I thought was ruined. It wouldn’t click on and looked as if the batteries had leaked acid onto the lens. Evidently, I was wrong. The poor little thrown-away light was signalling me: “I’m here. Help! I’m working. I’ve learned my lesson so don’t throw me away.”

Needless to say, I retrieved that stubborn light, wiped it down, and gave it another chance. I just hope it shines the next time I click “On.”

How about you getting in on the fun? Can you summarize one or more of my cozies with only three words? Give it a try. Here’s mine: A synopsis of each Darcy and Flora as well as each Ned McNeil mystery in three words:

The Cemetery Club: Graveyard, Treasure, Pursuit

Grave Shift: Earthquake, Cougar, Ranch

Best Left Buried: Old Secret, Revelation

Grave Heritage: Flood, Killer, Romance

Moonlight Can Be Murder: Murder, Hidden Past

By the Fright of the Silvery Moon: Oklahoma Outlaw, Greed
