A Bodiless Voice in the Maze

A Bodiless Voice in the Maze

The morning comes gently in, leaves on the trees not moving, the squirrel on the mailbox post quietly munching something, and Nemo cautiously approaching the door, sniffing the scents of last night’s fireworks. He survived another noisy Fourth and I’m sure he is inwardly rejoicing at the serenity of the morning after last night’s raucous celebration.

This morning, I’ll return to Ednalee and Ned McNeil. She too has survived an ordeal. You see, there is a maze on the Carver farm–it has been there for a couple of centuries–and Ned hates it. However, someone inside the maze is calling for help, so what can she do? Hesitantly, she enters. Where is that voice? In what direction? She goes a bit farther. But then, she hears footsteps behind her. Somebody is following her and she fears that person is up to no good. She runs blindly, wildly, but she is lost. Her pursuer, however, is not lost and has no trouble catching up with her. Ned’s search for the bodiless voice ends abruptly and…well, anyway, that’s the way it is in Moonstruck and Murderous.

Ned first burst upon the scene in Moonlight Can Be Murder. Are you a bit fatigued of the summer heat? Do you think longingly of snowy scenes and days so chilly a fire is needed on the hearth? Then, come with me to a small Oklahoma town and crunch through the snow, take a deep breath of frosty air, and prepare for Christmas that has a little bit of extra excitement thrown in. I think you’ll enjoy Moonlight as well as the second Ned book, By the Fright of the Silvery Moon. Each book has a bit of moon dust and a whole lot of excitement. Good books to take you from the heat of summer.

Nemo wanders into the back yard. Once again, it is his yard–a familiar, safe place, not at all the frightening, noisy great out-of-doors as it was yesterday and last night. Once again, he is back into his daily routine, walking the perimeter, checking to see if any marauders dare enter his domain. Satisfied that all is well, he settles in beside me with his bone while I write and sip my second cup of coffee.
